Check Bureau of Prisons Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons after a Mahnomen County connection, search the national federal-prison record and preserve its exact status. BOP is separate from Mahnomen County detention, Minnesota state prison, tribal corrections, ICE, and federal pretrial custody. A past release date with no current facility can support departure from BOP custody, but it does not prove release from every authority or the end of federal supervision. The federal docket, holding-facility record, and probation channel may be needed to explain what happened before or after the BOP event.

Federal Release Evidence Standard

A federal release claim should name the federal stage. A host-jail transfer can lead to U.S. Marshals custody before any BOP commitment. A BOP locator result later describes federal-prison custody. Federal supervised release is a court status after confinement. None of those records automatically resolves an ICE matter, Minnesota sentence, or Mahnomen warrant. Preserve the agency, number, date, and exact status attached to each event.

For physical departure from a partner jail, request that jail's transaction. For the sentence, use the federal judgment and docket. For BOP release, match the register number and locator date. When community supervision follows, the assigned federal probation channel controls its own terms. This sequence prevents “federal release” from hiding a transfer between custodians.

Note: A partner-jail departure may be a U.S. Marshals transfer, so confirm BOP commitment before searching the federal prison locator.

Historical BOP Release Records

The BOP locator's general historical reach begins in 1982, so older federal custody can require archived records. Even within coverage, an online result is a concise status, not the entire federal file. Save the register number, identity fields, displayed date, and location or status. Those details make a later records inquiry precise and reduce the risk of attaching a same-name result to a Mahnomen-connected person.

When a result and docket seem inconsistent, check whether the displayed date is past or projected and whether the person is in transit. A sentence can also involve jail credit, multiple cases, or another lawful hold that the short locator result does not explain. Request the owning federal record rather than estimating. BOP's daily update schedule also means a public change may follow physical processing.

Note: BOP generally begins historical locator coverage in 1982, while older federal releases may require archived records or National Archives research.

BOP Mahnomen Release Records

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the national federal-prison system. No BOP prison was identified inside Mahnomen County. A person can still have a local connection through residence, arrest history, court facts, or an earlier transfer, but the BOP record is federal. It should never be described as a Mahnomen jail release or an MNDOC discharge.

The BOP Inmate Locator generally covers federal prisoners released from 1982 forward as well as current federal-prison records. Its principal database updates daily. Older historical cases may require archived federal records or the National Archives. The locator proves only the custody transition shown within BOP's system.

Federal scope: “RELEASED” means no longer in BOP custody. It does not rule out another custodian or federal supervised release.

Search a BOP Release

BOP supports number searches by Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number and a name search with demographic fields. A unique number is the cleanest match when available. For a name search, compare full name, age, race, sex, register number, and result details. Do not select a record on name alone.

  1. Open the BOP locator and choose number or name search.
  2. Enter the complete supported identifier when known.
  3. For a name search, add the available demographic details.
  4. Compare the returned register number and identity fields.
  5. Read the release date and location or status exactly as displayed.
  6. Check the federal docket or another agency when the result shows movement rather than release.

A past release date plus no facility means BOP reports release on the listed date. A future date is projected. “IN TRANSIT” means custody is moving, not ending. “UNKNOWN” means BOP cannot state the term or date. Those labels should be reported without converting them into more definite claims.

Read BOP Release Fields

The locator can show register number, name, age, race, sex, release date, and a location or status. These fields help establish identity and BOP custody. They do not provide a Mahnomen host-jail booking record, a Minnesota court disposition, an ICE release, or a complete federal supervision history.

BOP resultAccurate reading
Past date, no facilityDeparture from BOP custody on the listed date
RELEASEDNo longer in BOP custody
IN TRANSITStill moving within custody
Future release dateProjected date that can change
UNKNOWNBOP cannot state the term or date

The BOP record explanation is the source for interpreting those results. The successful capture below preserves the federal release-field guidance.

The field definitions show why status must be limited to BOP custody. Another agency's intake or supervision record answers the next question.

BOP and USMS Custody

The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal pretrial prisoners and uses federal, state, local, and private partner facilities. Someone held in an out-of-county jail for a Mahnomen-related event could leave that roster because USMS moved the person. That disappearance is not proof of community release. The host's transfer entry and receiving intake establish the movement.

USMS has no public historical released-person locator comparable to BOP. Use the federal docket and release order, the actual holding facility's record, and the proper USMS district. BOP becomes the correct locator after a person enters the federal-prison system. A BOP no-result may simply mean the person remained in pretrial custody, was never committed to BOP, has an identity mismatch, or falls outside locator coverage.

Federal pretrial custody
Custody before the federal case is resolved, commonly managed by USMS.
BOP custody
Federal prison authority represented in the BOP locator.
Transfer
Movement to another facility or agency without community release.
Federal supervised release
Court-ordered community supervision after custody, separate from BOP confinement.

Confirm Federal Release

A BOP locator result is strongest when it matches a unique number and consistent identity details. Add the federal judgment or release order to understand the sentence and terms. If a local host was involved before BOP, obtain its departure disposition. If another authority took custody after BOP, obtain that receiving intake. Each document controls its own stage.

The District of Minnesota U.S. Probation FAQ says a person released from federal prison should report to the assigned probation officer within 72 hours, including weekends and holidays, and gives 612-664-5400 for instructions. That rule is for the released person and is not a public supervision lookup. It does show why BOP release and the end of supervision are not the same event.

When the exact historic release needs formal support, retain the locator result and seek the federal record that owns the disputed field. A current online result may change as records are corrected. Date and source should remain attached to any saved copy.

Mahnomen Federal Transfer Trail

Mahnomen County has no operating jail. The Sheriff may route an arrestee to a host facility, and that host may later transfer the person to federal authority. Start locally by asking the Sheriff for every receiving agency and transport entry. Then ask the host for the physical disposition and the federal agency that accepted custody.

Do not search BOP merely because the person left a county roster. If the record says USMS transfer, use the federal docket and holding-facility record. If it says ICE, use the immigration channel. If a federal judgment commits the person to BOP, the locator may later show the federal-prison status and release date.

The Mahnomen County released-inmate workflow explains how the local transport record connects to the correct state, tribal, or federal system. One clear custody chain is stronger than several unrelated name matches.

BOP Release Search Limits

BOP generally begins historical locator coverage in 1982. Older records may require archived sources. A name can be misspelled, changed, or shared by several people. The locator can also show a projected date that changes. Preserve the exact displayed language rather than estimating a release from the sentence headline.

Release from BOP does not establish release from ICE, a state warrant, another federal case, or any other lawful custody. Conversely, no BOP result does not prove that no federal detention occurred because USMS pretrial custody uses partner facilities and a separate record path. The question must stay limited to the system searched.

For a reported release, compare the BOP register number, identity fields, past date, status, docket, and any receiving or supervision record. If those sources disagree, request an official explanation instead of selecting the most convenient date.

Note: BOP data update daily, so a same-day change may not appear at the exact time physical custody changes.
